Nicola Hambridge Being peripherally involved was fun (though the filming was scarey!). Witnessing Gary, Ed and Rich, Annabel and the film crew, and Sharon and co at Logistik pull this together has been amazing and nerve wracking at the same time. Well done all! Favorite track: Dignity.

Gary Bouch This is a music project i have been running for the past year - exploring the relationship between music and mental health/wellbeing. All the songs were nominated by people with experience of mental ill-health and recorded by bands or artists with a connection to Leeds. And it's ace. Favorite track: Good Things.

Once upon a time, on a YouTube far, far away…There was a film by classical pianist James Rhodes in which he talked about how music aided his recovery while he was sectioned under the Mental Health Act. A friend took him a ‘contraband’ iPod full of classical music and it was listening to this that started his journey to recovery. His story inspired me and is why music is at the heart of Love Music Leeds.

One in four people will experience mental-ill health in their lifetime. If you include friends and family, then pretty much every one of us will have some sort of contact or experience of it. Different people have different ways of dealing with it and for some people, like James, music can play a significant part in this.

I had the idea of recording some songs which people found inspiring, had helped them through a difficult time or had helped their wellbeing. It was a conversation with Rich Huxley & Ed Waring from Leeds band Hope & Social which helped refine this idea into the album you are now holding. We asked people to suggest songs and we asked bands and solo artists from Leeds (apart from one!) to pick a nominated song to record.

One of the best parts of this project has been the conversations we’ve had and openness of people willing to talk openly about their own journey through bipolar, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress. If what we have done helps people to feel that they can talk openly about their experience of mental ill-health then I think we have achieved what we set out to do.

I hope you enjoy the album as much as we’ve enjoyed making it.
